Flashback: Donald Berwick Opposes Free Markets In Health Care

President Obama has officially made Donald Berwick his recess appointment to be the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

In 2008 while speaking to a British audience about why he opposes free market solutions to health care problems, Berwick essentially said we should move away from free markets and give leaders the final say.

“Please don’t put your faith in market forces. It is a popular idea that Adam Smith’s invisible hand will do a better job at designing care than leaders with plans can do. I do not agree. I find little evidence anywhere that market forces bluntly used that is just consumer choice among a ray of products with competitors fighting it out, leads to the health care system you want and need”, said Berwick.

Obama wrote the following in a press release:

It’s unfortunate that at a time when our nation is facing enormous challenges, many in Congress have decided to delay critical nominations for political purposes,” Obama said in the release. “These recess appointments will allow three extremely qualified candidates to get to work on behalf of the American people right away. With more than 180 nominees still pending before the Senate, it’s my hope that my colleagues in Congress will agree to put politics aside and move forward on these vitally important positions.

“We Must Redistribute Wealth” with hospitals. Just like the post office, fire & police stations. No wait, that's wrong. Think, THINK! Invisible hand. Invisible hand. Business and home owners must pay out of pocket for firemen! Or get fire insurance...or something..
  • the invisible hand doesn't apply here as so much of it involves luck.

    Mandrake,
The NHS maybe very poor quality but the US still falls far, far, far behind it. The UK is 18th. The US 36th. http://www.photius.com/rankings/healthranks.html
And the horror you must feel while drinking coffee having to look at those poor socialist giving blood!

Please do not get duped into the idea that this has anything to do with either cost or health. It has everything to do with Government control and power.
  • it's about cost and health. democrats think in those terms. it is the republicans that want the control and power. you are doing anything, ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING to get it back

Hey Berwick, ever looked at elective procedures like Lasik or boob jobs? Somehow, due to the free market those procedures are HALF of what they cost when they first came out.
  • boob jobs. have you checked out sarah palins boobs lately. they ain't the same ones she had when she quit herf governor job

DarrenN - the only reason they are distancing themselves from Obama is to keep thier offices. But this at the core is where Democratic systems lead - BIG GOVERMENT. It is one of the key distinctions between the two parties. Big goverment is never more efficent or fair. Do you want your hospital run like the DMV or the Post Office - or Fedral Express. This converstaion was over before it began - but YOU democrates of all color, location and persusion wanted CHANGE. You got it - now how can your distance yourself from the grand celebrations you threw upon Obamas election.
  • this is where really big government started. check this out:

You poor buggers. America is in the hands of a guy with more powers than the communist Pierre Elliott Trudeau, and we all know what he did to Canada. The United States shall as a direct result of this guy become a hollowed out state...with a bunch of warships and the inability to pay for them to go sail somewhere. Tough nuggies. At least the ret of the world will see you get your cummuppance.
  • this is power you repubs wanted bush to have. and you gave it to him. but you did it thinking that repubs were going to stay in office forever. cuz you had carl rove to guarentee that. wel, guess what...?

I have to disagree with DarrenN. There are NO blue dogs, or reagan dems or any moderates int he Dem party. They have been swept aside by the radical left and they no longer exist. If there were any, they would have voted against Healthcare, which they did not. This is not the party of JFK, but the party of Wright, Ayers, Moore, Moveon.org,The Daily Kos and other radical progressives. JFK would not recongnize the Dem party of today, and would in fact be horrified by it.
  • and their are no moderates in the republican party

Agreed - but worse the lets not forget teh DEMS WERE 100% SOLD ON THIS GUY THERE WAS NO ONE NOT CLAIMING TO BE ON THE BUS ON ELECTION DAY - now they are all saying is was someone elses idea.
Yes we can - bankrupt the worlds largest economy.
  • I honestly believe that even most Democrats like the Blue Dogs are trying to distance themselves from Obama. Their is a difference between liberal and a Socialists / Communist. I was once told that you can not be a socialist and a communist; however they are the same thing. Living in the UK is a socialists / communist country. I am an American living in South East England and I can say it's full socialism / communism. And NHS here is very poor quality. When they take blood from you in the hospital, its done in the canteen where others sit and drink coffee! This is no joke. I witnessed it. Obama is the most liberal person in politics. Look at the ones that supported this man, they were all communists giving him money for his campaigning. I am a Republican but I wouldn't mind a Blue Dog Democrat in office running things at the moment, would be 100% better than what we have now. I know a lot of African Americans that are now saying they will not vote Obama 2012 because he has done them more harm than good. And now this guy in charge of Medicare that Obama selected. This guy has a proven track record that he wants to slash medicare services by 30% and double medicare premiums on seniors from an average of $110 per month to $220 to $300 per month. Unfreaking real!

Lemme guess: An old white guy enjoying socialist health care (while complaining about it) speaking for black America.
